New colouring books are designed to help build little ones’ excitement for the Maldives
Tourism storyteller and hospitality marketing professional, Sharon Garrett, has been inspired by her experience of working in the Maldives to create her first kids’ colouring books. The ‘Your Maldives Holiday Adventure’ colouring and activity books are split into two volumes, available for purchase on Amazon.
The aim is to help families planning on visiting the Maldives build up excitement about the magic of island life. It also gives kids something to do on their flight, when they need a break from the sun, during a brief tropical downpour, or if they need some downtime.
The books contain 25 different island adventures to colour and learn about, including coral reefs, tropical fish, island culture, boats, beach scenes, and sustainability in a fragile ecosystem. With big bold outlines that make them easy to colour for little hands, they’re ideal for kids aged four to eight. Other than colouring, the book also encourages learning, imagination and island-inspired curiosity.
Author Sharon Garrette has spent several years working in the Maldives tourism industry. Through her work, Sharon has welcomed families from around the world and witnessed firsthand the excitement children feel when discovering new destinations.
It made her realise a child’s holiday adventure can begin long before they arrive at their destination. Inspired by these experiences, as well the children in her life, Sharon created the Holiday Adventure Series of colouring books. “I’m always in awe of calm parents with well-behaved kids,” Sharon says.
“My sister is a brilliant mother and a great example. With my two nephews, Dec and Raff, reading and activities were a huge part of their formative years and that transformed into sports, later. And our goddaughter, Eden, who is based in the UK now, was a true expat child when we all lived in the UAE (on a flight every other weekend before she was five). Her parents worked hard to find alternatives to devices.
“I think activities like colouring are useful not only for parents to occupy their kids, but also to give kids independence to turn to colouring when they are bored and to develop skills, which might seem old-fashioned, but it’s essential. Together with what I’ve seen in hotels and resorts – and many waiting rooms over the years – it was all the inspiration I needed to get on with the project”.
‘Your Maldives Holiday Adventure, Volume One‘ explores the vibrant underwater world of the Maldives, with pictures of tropical reef fish, sea turtles, coral gardens, snorkelling adventures, and lagoon life. Volume Two shifts the focus above the water, introducing children to island culture, sustainability, and the experiences that make a Maldives holiday so memorable. The are published by Storyteller Press and available for purchase on Amazon for USD $9.99 per book.
Sharon is also already developing more books for other destinations, including a children’s colouring and activity book celebrating New Zealand’s South Wairarapa – a rural community where Sharon now resides. It incorporates elements of Te Reo Māori language and local culture.
