‘Sustainability is not just a practice, but a promise’, says luxury resort’s general manager
With a spa designed in the shape of a lobster, over-water villas resembling geometric manta rays, and a bar inspired by a whale shark, it’s fair to say the local environment is a major theme at The St Regis Vommuli Resort Maldives. However, the link between nature and The St Regis Maldives is more than just skin deep – the five-star resort’s eco-credentials have been given the seal of approval by inspectors at Green Globe.
Green Globe is the world’s leading certification for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism worldwide. Its’ third-party inspectors assessed the resort on a range of metrics concerning environmental conservation, responsible tourism, and sustainability. They included The St Regis Volummi’s longstanding partnership with Reefscapers marine consultancy to preserve and restore its coral reefs, whereby guests are invited to participate in hands-on coral planting initiatives.
General Manager of The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, Vincent Pauchon, said: “We are deeply honoured to receive the Green Globe Certification, which reflects the dedication of our team in embracing sustainability at every level of our operations.
“Our commitment to preserving the natural environment of this island is at the heart of everything we do. Sustainability is not just a practice; it is a promise we make to future generations, ensuring that luxury and conservation go hand in hand.”
The Green Globe inspectors were also impressed by the introduction of The St Regis Maldives’ desalination project, ‘Fen’ (fen means water in Dhivehi). The new water bottling plant on the island minimizes The St Regis Maldives’ carbon footprint by filtering and desalinating seawater and turning it into fresh, clean still and sparkling water. For every bottle sold, $3 USD is contributed to the resort’s Blue Fund, which directly supports coral propagation projects with Reefscapers. Fen water is also available during mealtimes and is complimentary for all guests at breakfast and at the beach.
Another important achievement for any property wanting to be awarded a Green Globe certificate is having a comprehensive waste management strategy. The St Regis Maldives was applauded for its’ advanced recycling and composting systems, as well as for ensuring organic, locally grown produce and sustainable seafood is used in all the kitchens.
